Grand Canyon Rafting
Grand Canyon Rafting: Colorado River & Trail Expeditions
The Colorado River trip through the Grand Canyon is the best-known rafting expedition in the world. For nearly 300 miles the river flows freely through a mile-deep gorge of ever-changing views and vistas, revealing the history of the earth in its multi-colored layers of rock. The rapids are legendary, ranging from playful "riffles" to "big and splashy" to "absolute thrilling!" Side canyon hiking and off-river exploration will take you to places of wonder and delight where you can play in waterfalls, swim in turquoise pools, stand amazed upon scenic overlooks, or relish the cooling shade of hidden grottos.
Our Grand Canyon rafting equipment consists of custom-built 37-foot motorized rafts, 18-foot rowing rigs, and 16-foot paddle rafts. We offer deluxe motorized expeditions through the entire Grand Canyon from Lees Ferry to Pearce Ferry. Our non-motorized rowing and paddle trips start at Lees Ferry and end at Whitmore Wash. All of the trips include roundtrip transportation from Las Vegas.
Shorter Grand Canyon rafting trips are available on a limited basis for those who wish to hike into or out of the Grand Canyon in conjunction with their rafting trip or participate in our Grand Canyon Ranch and Raft trips which helicopter in at Whitmore Wash. Passengers on Upper Grand Canyon trips depart at Phantom Ranch and hike nine miles up to the South Rim. Lower Grand Canyon trip participants hike nine miles down from the rim to the river to start their trip near Phantom Ranch. Hiking in and out of the Grand Canyon is very strenuous. Hikers must be experienced and in good physical condition. Ranch and Raft expeditions begin at Whitmore Wash and travel through the lower 90 miles of the Grand Canyon ending at Pearce Ferry.

Most river runners segregate the Grand Canyon into upper and lower sections for rafting and both offer great rapids and breathtaking scenery. The Upper Grand Canyon stretches between Lees Ferry to Phantom Ranch - a distance of 87 miles. This offers 19 major rapids and is usually covered in three to six days. On the course, you may stop for a swim in the sparkling blue waters of the 'Little Colorado' - a major tributary of the river. This section you may also hike to the Nankoweep Indian Ruins, which are featured on the USA Grand Canyon quarter. This trips end at Phantom Ranch, and rafters hike out of the canyon via the Bright Angel Trail with a hiking guide.
The Lower Grand Canyon rafting section runs from Phantom Ranch down to Whitmore Wash or Lake Mead and takes 6-8 days. The two largest rapids in the Grand Canyon Crystal and Lava Falls are on this section. Also the famous Deer Creek Falls and Havasu Canyon are on this section of the river. These trips generally take 6-8 days.
The last section of the Grand Canyon is the section from Whitmore Wash to Lake Mead we offer trips here that include a night at the Bar 10 ranch on the North Rim followed by 2-3 days of rafting. This is a great adventure package trip that includes a helicopter ride into the Grand Canyon.
Hiking off-river from the Colorado River can take you to the crystal clear creeks where you will see some of the most beautiful waterfalls. You can also venture through the hidden Canyons to uncover evidence of ancient inhabitants concealed from most Grand Canyon visitors.
On each rafting expedition, the tour guides from Colorado River and Trail Expeditions will try to camp at the perfect spots where you can relax under the starry skies and enjoy healthy dutch oven cooking. For all rafting expeditions we carry a full outdoor kitchen set-up to make you great meals. The comfortable sleeping bags, foam pads, cots, and tents ensure that you relax fully well to rejuvenate yourself for the next day’s adventure.

Should you choose a motorized trip you will travel aboard a 37-foot motorized raft. Each raft accomodates about 12 passengers plus crew. Generally there are two rafts on each trip. We feel our motorized rafts are the best in the Grand Canyon. They are roomy and comfortable. In between rapids you can walk around, lean back on the side tubes, or even stretch out on the flat deck area at the front of our rafts. These boats carry everything you will need for the entire trip.
Our 18-foot row rafts accomodate 4-5 passengers plus the guide who rows the boat.
Our Paddle Rafts hold 6-8 passengers plus a guide who steers the raft. On our "Paddle Trips" guests paddle all of the time, on our "Rowing Trips" a paddle raft is available on a rotational basis.
A Dory is available on many of our Grand Canyon rowing trips. A Dory holds 2-4 people and gives a great ride through the rapids.
To many people the off-river hiking is as spectacular as the river corridor itself. We specialize in off-river hiking on all of our river expeditions. We are certain you will see places on our expeditions most river travelers miss.
Upon arrival, each participant will be given a large water-proof bag for clothing and personal items. Another water-proof bag will contain your provided sleeping bag, foam Paco Pad, and a large plastic ground tarp. Our water-proof bags are 30 inches high and have a diameter of 14 inches.
Each participant will also receive an ammo can. It is always readily accesible during the day and is the best place to keep sunscreen, cameras, notebooks, etc.
Our Kitchen includes everything we need to make delicious food. Dutch Ovens, Fire Pans, Propane Stove, Tables, Drink Coolers, and Under-Table Tarps to help us "Leave No Trace." Our boats carry everything we need for the entire trip.
Cots are provided for all guests on our "Motorized Rafting" expeditions.
Our sleep kit includes a fresly laundered sleeping bag. Our sleeping bags are made in the USA by Wiggy Inc. Wiggy also makes sleeping bags for the US Airforce.
We supply tents from Kelty & ALPS, but generally the night sky is so spectacular that most people want to sleep out under the stars.
We supply camp chairs on all of our rafting expeditions.
A handwash device is set-up at lunch and in camp. It is mandatory for guests to wash hands before meals and after using the bathroom.
One of our toilets is always enclosed by a roomy yellow tent. It allows privacy as well as a place to change your clothes.
Our specially designed toilet makes the fear of using camp toilets go away. It is the most sanitary and clean toilet ever to be used on an outdoor expedition. It has a fly proof lid and utilizes a special chemical along with specially designed plastic bags that allow it to be set-up clean everyday. It has the ability to hold solid waste as well as urine. Along with the toilet, Lysol and toilet paper are always located inside the tent.
