A Guide to Rafting Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River

Nestled deep in the narrow gorge of the Upper Colorado River and along the stunning sandstone cliffs of the Utah-Colorado state line, Westwater Canyon is one of the renowned spots for Moab River rafting. With its swirling pools and exciting rapids, this canyon provides the perfect water sports adventure for both thrill-seekers and first-time rafters.

Rafting Westwater Canyon is hailed as “The World’s Best Short Whitewater Trip” by National Geographic Magazine. This river rafting trip near Moab, Utah, offers a visually stunning landscape. The multi-colored sedimentary cliffs combined with the Black Precambrian rock, create a mini version of the Grand Canyon. In addition to the scenery, the river plunges through about 10 class III-IV rapids, making for an exciting whitewater rafting experience.

It was amazinggg!!

I got some girlfriends and sisters together to take a 2 day trip through Westwater Canyon for my birthday, and it was awesome! I want to go again! But now I don’t even think I need a reason like a birthday because it was such a perfect getaway:

Westwater Trip

I have taken two Westwater trips with CRATE. Both trips were exceptional. The level of planning was amazing and the crew always knew exactly what to do. The staff were professional, friendly and knowledgeable. We felt very safe on the river and really enjoyed the rapids. The food was incredible (steak, french toast, bacon, delicious sandwiches, snacks…). Overall, I couldn’t imagine a better trip or a better company with which to go rafting.

WestWater

What a great time. I have been rafting with other river companies but no one comes close to the experience and customer service offered by CRATE. My dietary concerns (vegetarian) were not a problem, food was great at every meal. I had the opportunity to hike as much as I wanted, or conversely just laze around the campsite. Guides are knowledgeable and personable, they really care. I consider these people my good friends.

Awesome – the best

What more can I say – I have taken 17 trips with Colorado River & Trail over the past 31 years. Every trip they offer including both Alaska trips. Planing another Grand Canyon trip summer 2011 (my 7th). Their equipment is the best! The guides are outstanding! I would not consider any other outfitter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? Here are the most common ones we get — and we’re always happy to answer more.

  • What does a day on the Colorado River actually feel like on a Westwater Canyon rafting trip?

We start our Westwater Canyon trips at the Westwater Ranch put-in, easing into the day with a relaxed float. For the first couple of hours, the river moves gently through cottonwood groves and past tall sandstone cliffs. It’s quiet and scenic, and this is often where we spot bald eagles, great blue herons, and other birds along the shoreline.

As the canyon begins to tighten up, small rapids appear and the geology changes dramatically. The river cuts into ancient, dark metamorphic rock, and you really feel like you’re entering a different world. There’s also plenty of human history here—early placer miners once tried their luck along this stretch. We stop for a laid-back riverside lunch with time to relax, skip rocks, explore, or jump in for a refreshing swim.

Depending on where camp is, we may run a few rapids on the first day, but most often we camp above the main whitewater. That leaves the afternoon open for hiking, wandering side canyons, or just kicking back at camp. Evenings are a favorite part of the trip: watching the sun light up the canyon walls, then settling in as the stars come out and the canyon goes quiet.

The next morning is when the excitement really kicks in. We run a fun, continuous stretch of rapids—Big Hummer, Funnel Falls, Skull, Bowling Alley, Sock-It-To-Me, and Last Chance. After that, the river settles down again, and we finish the trip with an easy float, often drifting along in our life jackets and soaking it all in before the takeout.

River Difficulty & Conditions

  • How difficult is rafting in Westwater Canyon?

Westwater Canyon makes for a fun, exciting day on the water. The Class III–IV rapids provide plenty of action, great momentum through the canyon, and a classic whitewater experience set against beautiful desert scenery.

  • What is the flow of the river like?

River flows in Westwater Canyon can vary widely throughout the season. Spring runoff can bring high, fast-moving water, while summer and fall flows are lower and more technical. No matter the flow, the rapids remain fun and exciting, offering a consistently engaging whitewater experience all season long.

Logistics & Access (General)

  • How do I get to Westwater Canyon?

Our trips meet at our warehouse in Green River, Utah. We’ll get everyone checked in, hand out dry bags and gear, go over the plan for the day, and then drive to the put-in to get on the river.

  • Where should I stay in Green River before the trip?

Green River offers several lodging options, including River Terrace Inn, Super 8, Comfort Inn, and Holiday Inn Express. There are also campgrounds such as KOA Campground and Shady Acres RV Park for those seeking more rustic accommodations.

Guides & Decision-Making

  • How experienced are the guides?

The guides for Westwater Canyon rafting trips are highly experienced, with most having 10-25 years of river-running experience. They are certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR and are knowledgeable about the natural history and safety procedures of the canyon.

Planning Considerations

  • When is the best time to raft Westwater Canyon?

Westwater is a great trip all summer long. The rapids stay fun and exciting throughout the season, and summer brings warm days, comfortable water time, and a classic Westwater experience.

  • What should I bring on the trip?

After you sign up, we’ll send you a detailed packing list to help you prepare. In general, you’ll want lightweight, quick-drying clothes, sun protection like sunscreen and a hat, a water bottle, and sturdy footwear such as river sandals. A camera in a waterproof case is great for photos, and any personal items you may want for the day should fit in a small dry bag.
